The United States government is composed of three separate but equal branches; the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. The legislative branch is served primarily via the United States Congress.
The U.S. Congress is composed of two chambers; the House of Representatives and the Senate. I intern for the House majority leader, the second-in-command in the House behind the Speaker. For that reason, Majority Leader McCarthy has a larger staff than most rank-and-file members of Congress.
In his office in the Rayburn House Office Building is the congressman's legislative staff. This includes one of his chiefs of staff, his legislative director, two legislative fellows, two legislative assistants, and a staff assistant. Answering to all of these staff members are interns. There are typically about three to six interns in the office on a typical day, and they help the staff assistant with tours and letters and the rest of the staff with legislative work.
In his Leadership Office in the Capitol building is another chief of staff, several special advisers, policy advisers, security detail, the communications director, scheduler, his floor team, press team, and staff assistants. Beneath these again are several interns. These interns generally help the staff assistants with various tasks throughout the day, as well as take on projects from these more senior staffers.
